What we scan

One careful workflow for every type of original

Tell us what you have and what you want to do with the files. We will recommend a sensible resolution and format instead of automatically selling the largest files.

Printed photographs

Loose prints, postcards and photographs in different sizes.

For viewing, family archives, reprints and enlargements.

Mounted slides

35 mm slides and other transparencies, individually captured.

Optional infrared dust and scratch reduction where the film type allows it.

Negatives and 35 mm film

Colour and black-and-white negative strips or individual frames.

Conversion to positive images with tonal and colour correction.

Documents and archives

Certificates, contracts, letters and multi-page collections.

PDF or image output, with naming and folder structure agreed in advance.

Restoration and retouching

Faded, torn, stained or scratched photographs.

The realistic scope, time and price are confirmed after we inspect the image.

Resolution and files

Files prepared for how you will actually use them

DPI is only one part of quality. The condition and size of the original, scanner, tonal range and processing all matter. These are practical starting points.

MaterialTypical resolutionAvailable outputSuitable for
Printed photographs300 / 600 / 1200 DPIJPEG or TIFFScreen viewing, archive, reprint or enlargement
Slides and negatives2400 / 3200 / 4800 DPIJPEG or TIFFArchive, TV viewing and high-quality printing

JPEG is convenient for everyday use; TIFF is the better master file for further editing and long-term preservation. We can provide both by agreement.

What you receive

A useful archive, not just a folder of scans

We agree the output before work begins, keep your originals identifiable and explain what automatic correction can and cannot achieve.

Appropriate detail

Resolution is matched to the original and the intended display, print or archival use.

Natural correction

Brightness, contrast and colour can be corrected without making old photographs look artificial.

Clear organisation

Files can be named and grouped by box, album, year, event or your own sequence.

Careful handling

Originals are handled discreetly, kept together and returned after the order is completed.

Realistic expectations

Scanning cannot recreate detail that is missing from a very small, blurred or severely damaged original. Digital ICE works well on many colour films but is not suitable for traditional silver-based black-and-white film. Complex reconstruction and retouching are quoted separately.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The points customers most often need before sending irreplaceable originals.

Which resolution should I choose?

For printed photographs, 600 DPI is a strong archival default and 1200 DPI may help with enlargement. For 35 mm slides and negatives, 2400–4800 DPI is typical. We recommend the economical option that fits your goal.

Should I remove photographs from albums?

If they can be removed without damage, loose photographs are easier to scan. Never force photographs that are stuck or fragile; send photos of the album first so we can advise you.

Do you scan black-and-white negatives?

Yes. Traditional black-and-white film can be scanned, but infrared Digital ICE usually cannot be used on silver-based emulsions, so dust and scratches may require manual work.

How should I label the order?

Separate groups with paper dividers or numbered envelopes and include a list. We can mirror those labels in folder and file names.

Will my originals be returned?

Yes. Original photographs, films, slides and documents remain yours and are returned after completion.

How long does scanning take?

Timing depends on quantity, condition, resolution and current workload. After reviewing your overview photos or the material, we provide an indicative completion window.

Can I receive TIFF as well as JPEG?

Yes. JPEG is compact and convenient; TIFF is suitable as an archival master or for further editing. Large TIFF collections require more storage.

Can you restore a badly damaged photograph?

Often we can improve it, but the result depends on the surviving detail. Send a clear photo first; we will explain what is realistic and quote restoration separately.
